LSM E-News - February 2019

Don't You LOVE the Power of 10?

Give the Power of 10 Campaign a Little Love this Month

The power of the past 10 years has given Southern Maryland more than 325 leaders, all striving to make a positive impact in our region.

LSM is exploring opportunities for additional programming, partnerships, and new technology; but we need your support. Over the next three years, we plan to host over 20 nonprofit projects and grow our Teen Leadership Academy to 75 graduates or more. Imagine what we could accomplish if we had 10 new donors, or if everyone made a recurring monthly gift of $10 or more. Please consider supporting LSM and future classes.

It's a sweet opportunity...make your pledge today!

February 7 was the LSM Class of 2019 Public Safety session. The Class of 2019 learned about regional public safety from the vantage point of first responders and explored the cooperative relationships among local first responders including law enforcement, corrections, fire/EMS, and federal agencies.

The class started the day with a tour of the St. Mary's County Emergency Communications Center, led by Gerald Gardiner LSM'15, who is the agency's emergency management manager. Chris Strong from the National Weather Service also spoke with the class. Major Deb Diedrich walked the participants through the St. Mary's County Detention Center and then the group boarded the bus for the Harry Lundeburg School of Seamanship. Lunch was sponsored by the HLSS at its Paul Hall Center. A sheriff's panel with the three county sheriffs took place (Mike Evans, Calvert; Troy Berry, Charles; Tim Cameron, St. Mary's). Then the class moved to the Sacco Fire School where they learned about firefighting. Sgt. Todd Fleenor gave a K9 demonstration and Lt. Robert Russell oversaw a firearms demonstration before the session's end. The day concluded with a social gathering at Old Towne Pub in Leonardtown.  Thanks to program advocates Capt. Steven Hall LSM'18 and Chris Breedlove LSM'18.
