LSM E-News - February 2020

Housing & Human Services Session - February 6th

On February 6, the LSM Executive Program Class of 2020 experienced Housing & Human Services in Southern Maryland.

The morning began with Cathy Meyers, LSM founding sponsor and executive director at Center for Children, Inc., presenting the Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACE) assessment. Afterward, she gave context to the assessment, educating the class on how childhood experiences, poverty, mental health, and homelessness can be intertwined and how adverse childhood experiences can affect one’s ability to thrive. The class also received an overview of A.L.I.C.E, from session advocate Mike Bellis LSM’19, executive director of United Way of Charles County.  Bellis introduced the A.L.I.C.E. report which details financial struggles and hardships faced by Marylanders, many of whom are “one blown transmission away” from financial crisis.

Chris Longmore LSM’09, attorney and partner at Dugan, McKissick & Longmore, led the lunchtime activity and discussion on how the class, as leaders, can help with housing and human services issues in Southern Maryland and beyond. Next, the class heard from representatives of area nonprofits including the Three Oaks Center and LifeStyles of Maryland, Inc.  The discussion centered on a number of topics related to homelessness in Southern Maryland

The class then traveled to Habitat for Humanity’s ReStore facility in Lexington Park where they learned more about the organization’s mission and volunteered their time.

LEAP Orientation - January 17th

LSM's new Emerging Leaders Program (LEAP) Class of 2020 held its first of six program sessions on January 17, kicking off the pilot program in the tri-county region.

The day began at the Indian Head Pavilion with a discussion on the definition of a leader with Col. Joe Mortenson, USMC (Ret.) LSM'16. Participants then spent the majority of the session learning about the Emergenetics behavioral assessment tool, reviewing their profiles, and gaining an understanding of how to apply their new self-knowledge within a team framework.

During lunch, a panel discussion on leadership and current community issues was facilitated by Theresa Kuhns LSM'19  with Charles County leaders including Sheriff Troy Berry, Commissioner President Reuben B. Collins II, Esq., Economic Development Director Darrel Brown, Executive Director of Schools Marvin Jones, and Technical Director of NSWC IHEODTD Ashley Johnson.

Leadership Southern Maryland’s Emerging Leaders Program (LEAP) provides educational programming opportunities to new or emerging leaders in our region. Through a series of six “experiences”, young leaders will facilitate, foster, and refine their individual leadership understanding and abilities via structured course curriculum and a focus on self-discovery, teamwork, and networking. These sessions will conclude with a capstone project and graduation in June. Experts from across the region and state representing business, government, education, and the nonprofit community will serve as panelists and guest speakers.
