Executive Program Class of 2020 Experiences Healthcare in Southern Maryland

LEONARDTOWN, Md. – January 15, 2020: On January 9, 2020, the Leadership Southern Maryland (LSM) Class of 2020 participated in the fifth of nine educational sessions for the 2019-20 LSM Executive Program – Healthcare. Sponsored by The Chesapeake-Potomac Healthcare Alliance, this one-day event began with a panel discussion on healthcare issues and challenges in Southern Maryland.  The panel included representatives from CalvertHealth System, University of Maryland Charles Regional Medical Center, and MedStar St. Mary’s Hospital.  The discussion was followed by a tour of University of Maryland Charles Regional Medical Center where class members got an opportunity to see the lab, emergency department, and the hospital’s new labor and delivery facility.

Following the tour, the class boarded a bus and headed to Sagepoint Senior Living Services for an up-close look at the memory care services they offer to seniors.  While at Sagepoint, the class was given the unique opportunity to participate in a dementia exercise that demonstrated the challenges faced by those coping with memory loss and sensory issues.

Walden’s Anchor facility in Charlotte Hall was next on the agenda.  The class received an overview of the facility and its addiction treatment programs by Chief Executive Director Laura Webb.  They also heard from a former program participant who shared her personal story and her path to recovery.

The healthcare session also included presentations from Health Partners, Inc’s Chrisie Mulcahey LSM’18 on medical resources for the underserved and an overview of services offered by Maryland Coalition of Families from Amy Young, a family peer support specialist.  Tours of Health Partners and the Charles County Sheriff’s Office HOPE (Heroin Overdose Prevention Effort) trailer rounded out the day.
