On April 13, the LSM Board of Directors approved the LSM Emerging Leaders Program (LEAP) Committee’s proposal to re-launch the program in January 2024. LEAP 2024 will take flight January 12 through June 21, 2024. LSM is now recruiting for (you guessed it!) the next Best Class Ever!
LEAP candidates are high-caliber early and mid-career professionals who have at least three years of work experience, a track record of and community involvement, and employment or residence in Calvert, Charles, and St. Mary’s counties. Participants will enjoy six engaging “experiences” that cultivate and refine their leadership acumen by means of a curriculum focused on self-discovery, teamwork, and networking. The LEAP application opens on April 17 and closes September 30, 2023. Applicants will be reviewed on a rolling basis. Selected candidates will be approved by the Board of Directors at their June 8, August 10, and October 12 meetings.
Sincere thanks to the LEAP Committee for their great work: Christina Taylor, LEAP ‘22 (Chair); Basia Bartczak, LEAP ‘20; Laura Friess, LEAP ‘22; Maya Hoagland, LEAP ‘22; Donna Sisson, LEAP ‘22; Tiffany Young, LEAP ‘22; Sam Baldwin, LSM ‘16; and Leslie Fazio, LSM ‘22

The Rex Theater and Blazin' Keys Light Up Class of 2023 Fundraiser |
Joe Kurley of the REX (third from right) presents the Leadership Southern Maryland Class of 2023 with the proceeds of their fundraiser.
The REX Theater in Leonardtown, MD, presented nonprofit organization Leadership Southern Maryland (LSM) with a $5,926 check this week, proceeds of a March 18 fundraiser featuring the Blazin’ Keys Dualing Pianos.
The REX partnered with the LSM Executive Program Class of 2023, who approached owner Joe Kurley with the idea to host an encore performance of fan favorites, the Blazin’ Keys, to raise funds for a class gift to LSM.
“When posed with the question of what to do as a class fundraiser, I immediately thought of hosting an event at The REX,” said Ryan Morning, AVA Group President and Co-Founder and LSM class member. “The recently completed REX Theater, a 300+ person event venue, was the perfect location to host a Dueling Pianos event, and having worked with the Blazin' Keys, I knew they would like the venue and put on a great show.”
“To say we had a blast is an understatement,” Kurley said. “The Blazin’ Keys always bring audiences to their feet. The fun we all had that night was enhanced, for us at The REX, by the fact that we were also supporting our community.”
“Joe Kurley and general manager Kiera Johnson are fantastic to work with,” Morning added. “They do so much to help support local nonprofits and went over and above to ensure this event was a success. From coordinating ticket sales and displaying the logos of our sponsors, to special touches like sponsors' names on table displays and ushering sponsors to their tables, The REX helped the LSM Class of 2023 set the bar high! And the venue is fantastic. There is truly not a bad seat in the house.”
A round of applause to the Executive Program Class of 2023 and to Class Gift Captains Denise Kopel and Steve Girard, who organized the event with the able assistance of Ryan Morning. The event raised a total of $6,500 for LSM.

LSM Experiences the Front Lines of Public Safety |
CAPT Douglas Burfield, Executive Officer, Naval Air Station Patuxent River, tries 50-pound firefighting gear on for size
The Leadership Southern Maryland (LSM) Executive Program went behind the scenes of public safety on April 7 to learn about the operations and critical issues of tri-county law enforcement and fire and rescue services. The group met at the University of Maryland Fire and Rescue Institute – Southern Maryland Regional Training Center in La Plata.
Chris Breedlove LSM ‘18, Chief of Zoning Enforcement for Calvert County, and Jay Mattingly LSM ‘20, Training & Quality Assurance Coordinator, St. Mary’s County Department of Emergency Services, orchestrated an action-packed day of exercises and demonstrations designed to give the executives a taste of what it’s like to be on the front lines of public safety.
Participants went behind the scenes of Charles County 911 Call Center operations and observed a firefighting demo by members of the Waldorf, Prince Frederick, and Hollywood Volunteer Fire Departments. Trooper 2 of the Maryland State Police Aviation Command briefed the group on its law enforcement, medevac, and search and rescue operations. Deputies from the Calvert County Sheriff’s Department Patrol Bureau demonstrated motorcycle patrol and drone operations. Instructors at the Southern Maryland Criminal Justice Academy demonstrated SWAT and K-9 operations and put volunteer participants through firearm training simulations.
“The hyper-realistic scenario I was placed in for the firearm training simulation made me realize I had no idea how quickly an officer must assess and be ready to respond in situations,” said Toni Kruska, Donor Relations and Special Events Manager for the College of Southern Maryland Foundation. “I now have a deeper appreciation for the men and women who put their lives on the line for our community every time they step into their uniforms.”
A common theme in discussions was the challenge of recruiting and retaining public safety personnel. Sheriff Ricky Cox (Calvert), Sheriff Troy Berry (Charles), and Sheriff Steven Hall, LSM’18 (St. Mary’s) described outreach initiatives in schools and in the community to build relationships with youth and let them know their talents are needed.
The sheriffs and participants also discussed challenges related to crime rates, violence, and public policy, expressing confidence in the community’s ability to work together to discover solutions to problems. “Ultimately we all want safe, sustainable communities,” Sheriff Berry said |
